5 Print Myths — Busted (And What You Should Know Instead)

5 Print Myths — Busted (And What You Should Know Instead)

Print is often misunderstood. Here are five common myths about printing — and why they don’t hold up.

Myth 1: Print is bad for the environment

Reality: Today’s printing industry is greener than many think. Recycled paper, sustainably managed forests, and eco-conscious inks are common. Plus — paper has a one-time carbon cost, whereas digital usage (screens, devices) generates emissions repeatedly over time.

Myth 2: You can’t personalize print

Reality: With modern technology like variable data printing (VDP), each printed piece (mailers, postcards, brochures) can be customized with names, images, or tailored offers — just like digital campaigns.

Myth 3: Print is expensive

Reality: The cost-per-piece drops when you print in bulk. A well-planned print run can be much more cost-effective than small digital ads that get lost or ignored.

Myth 4: Print is less effective than digital

Reality: Many people still prefer tangible, printed materials. Studies show a strong portion of audiences recall print materials longer, find print more trustworthy, and enjoy the tactile experience.
Use print and digital together — e.g. include QR codes linking to web pages.

Myth 5: Digital designs and print designs are interchangeable

Reality: Digital and print have different requirements. RGB color schemes don’t always translate well to CMYK in print. Images that look great on screen (at 72 dpi) may appear blurry when printed unless you supply a higher resolution (300 dpi) version. You must adapt your design for the medium — don’t just export your web file for printing.

Bottom line: Don’t let myths stop you from using print as a powerful element in your marketing mix. A little planning, the right files, and partnering with a quality printer make all the difference.
